A re you searching for that Indian Chief project you’ve always dreamt of owning, or that elusive carburetor for your 1938 BMW Kompressor or maybe that missing girder fork for your 1957 Ariel 4G MkII? You’re likely to find those parts and a whole lot more at the world’s largest motorcycle swap meet in July.

This year marks the 18 th running of the American Motorcyclist Association’s Vintage Motorcycle Days, which manages to attract tens of thousands of bike enthusiasts and hundreds and hundreds of vendors from everywhere imaginable.

Nearly 70,000 people attended last year’s event, held on the grounds of the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, one of the premier racing courses in the U.S. And that figure, according to AMA, makes this meet the biggest in the world.

Although parts for classic bikes are plentiful, you’ll also find parts and accessories for more contemporary bikes scattered among 35 acres of Mid-Ohio from July 24 to 26.

In past years, more spectators have attended this weekend swap meet than most of the road racing events held at Mid-Ohio. The only exception might be the IndyCar Series races, which returned to Mid-Ohio a couple years ago.

Why such incredible interest in a motorcycle swap meet? “There’s more passion on two wheels,” a vendor from Minneapolis explained last year, surrounded by motorcycles with names unfamiliar to even the most weathered riders.

They included DKW, Jawa, Montessa and Parilla.

And bargains abound. A year ago, you could have bought an outrageous Moto Guzzi LeMans for $3,000 or a rough-looking, but complete, Indian Chief for $10,000, not to mention an Indian fender for $500 and a pair of Diamond plate saddle bags for “a reasonable offer”.

Along with the swap meet, there are bike shows, stunt shows and the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame auction.

Not enough? There’s also the American Historic Motorcycle Racing Association competition, which includes road racing, motocross and dirt track racing for vintage and post-vintage motorcycles. The three-wheeled racing bikes are a favorite.

Incidentally, BSA is the marque for this year’s Vintage Motorcycle Days. Birmingham Small Arms, better known as BSA, produced motorcycles beginning in 1863 and ending in 1973 when it was bought by the Norton Villiers Triumph company. With names like Super Flash and Road Rocket, BSA bikes were known for their reliability and price. And the fact they leaked less oil than most other Brit bikes of the time also helped them to win popularity.

All proceeds from the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days benefit the AMA’s Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, which is located about three hours south of Mid-Ohio in Pickerington, OH, a suburb of Columbus.
